On book fairs...

and those who think they know best....

CrazyHorse is in 1st grade. He reads like he's in 4th grade. The lovely volunteers at School's bookfair decided that he was not *allowed* to get books on his level because they didn't believe him that he reads at that level. His teacher wasn't in the room of course or she would have helped.

It just frustrates me that these people want to pigeon hole children by age instead of ability. Have they never dealt with accelerated or disabled children? Age is a poor determining factor.

Basically - I'm just POd and there's not a whole lot I can do.

The Adventures of Wolverine

We have walking!! A bit stumbly, a bit jerky, timid steps - but we do indeed have walking. And he enjoys it mightily. Pretty soon, he's going to be a terror. I have to get the house ready for the storm of curiousity that is about to hit full force!

Buddy, the puppy, is acclimating well. Champ, the older dog, seems to have adopted him. All is well and good with them, so long as Buddy leaves Champ's favorite bone alone. And he's learning.

CrazyHorse now has glasses. But I fear the perscription may be wrong so we're getting a second opinion today. Long story short: went to place A and Dr. A was an ass. Said stupid things and did not spend much time looking at CrazyHorse's eyes, even though the numbers all point to ambliopea - which is NOT good. He wouldn't answer my questions and the people in the front, where you pick your frames and do that kind of thing were even worse. I asked them several times about what our insurance would cover and they never did answer me. Never went over options with the lenses, just typed it all in and said - $280 please. I tried asking more questions and no one would answer me so I took the kids and I left. With a copy of the prescription. Went to place B - they were great at answering my questions and walking me through what was and was not covered. Hubster went ahead and got his checkup with Dr. B. Very thorough, very inquisitive and helpful. Wish I'd gone to Dr. B first! So, today CrazyHorse is going to see Dr. B and we'll see if we can't get this straightened out. And then, when I have the proper prescription, I'm going to start filing complaints about Place A... cause they really pissed me off.

Schools and Issues.

Had my parent teacher conference today! I'm not completely happy but I'm no longer not happy with the teacher. I'm not happy with the system.

The teacher though - I like her. She's overworked, frazzled but completely devoted to her job and I like that. We were scheduled for a 20 minute conference but we were there for 45 minutes or so - looking at the things she has prepared for her 'advanced readers' and that seems much more on the level of stuff that CrazyHorse needs to be doing - comprehension of cohesive stories and things of that nature. I like the look of that.

They got a new curiculum this year and it's taking time to work out the kinks. So - we'll play it by ear and see where it goes but, I'm seeing this as a good step in the right direction.

Puppies and Babies

It is not advisable to have a six week old puppy and a 13 month old baby at the same time. Trust me on this. Especially when both of them are newly weened. I'm tired and cranky but CrazyHorse is mostly happy with his birthday present.

He's a little afraid of the teeth but we've made great strides on that and hopefully, in a few months when he starts to settle down a little, all will be fantastic.
